You Wouldn’t Be You if You Didn’t Know, A Poem by Chris Russell

You knew you’d be in

this grocery store

beside this stranger

in aisle 2, thinking

to yourself: This guy

thinks I’m not him,

and that he’s in a grocery

store buying groceries.

And don’t even try

to tell me you didn’t.

Because you wouldn’t

be you if you didn’t

know. But that doesn’t

mean you know why.
