I Was Just Afraid You’d Say You Didn’t Know, A Poem by Chris Russell

If I believe there is a kind of wisdom inside me,

and also believe that this idea is what

keeps me closed to said wisdom,

then if I truly want to wake up

won’t I need to stop thinking of reasons for why

I may or may not be able to awaken?

That’s the question I wanted to ask you and didn’t,

because I feared you’d say something like

you’re never closed to wisdom, because

uncertainty and being a shit and doubting

everything is that wisdom too. But mostly

I was just afraid you’d say you didn’t know

and that that would be the end of the conversation.
